This trekking experience offers the opportunity to explore the Andes Mountains just a short drive from Mendoza. The journey begins heading west along Route 7 towards the mountains, where the landscape gradually changes from vineyards and valleys to rugged Andean scenery.
About the Vallecitos Area
The route passes through the Potrerillos Valley, located between the Precordillera and the Cordillera Frontal mountain ranges. Along the way you will pass the Potrerillos Lake before continuing on a dirt road toward the Vallecitos ski area, where the trekking portion of the experience begins.
The Trekking Experience
From the ski area the trail enters a mountain gorge surrounded by impressive peaks such as Mount Franke and Mount San Bernardo. The path follows a small stream and climbs gradually through high-altitude terrain where natural springs and alpine vegetation can be found.
During the trek you may also spot local wildlife such as guanacos or condors flying overhead. The route eventually reaches a scenic area with views of Mount Vallecitos, where you will stop to enjoy a picnic lunch in the mountains.
After lunch, depending on the group’s energy and conditions, the hike can continue further into the valley where glacial formations have shaped the landscape. In winter months the area may be covered in snow, and snowshoes can be used if necessary.
